A small new addition has quietly appeared at SeaWorld Orlando, but what it replaced may be considerably more interesting.
The park has transformed one of its former designated smoking areas into a new splash pad, giving families another place to cool off during Central Florida’s notoriously hot afternoons. On the surface, the project may seem like a relatively modest improvement to the park’s landscape and guest experience. Look a little closer, however, and the change raises a much larger question about the future of smoking at SeaWorld Orlando.
With the former smoking area now repurposed, SeaWorld Orlando has only one designated smoking location inside the park.
SeaWorld has not announced any plans to become entirely smoke-free. Its current policy continues to permit cigarettes, vaping, and electronic cigarettes within designated outdoor smoking areas. Nevertheless, the gradual reduction of those locations is notable, particularly as other major Central Florida theme parks have adopted increasingly restrictive smoking policies.
Walt Disney World eliminated designated smoking areas from inside its theme parks in 2019, requiring guests who wish to smoke or vape to use designated locations outside the park entrances. Universal Orlando has also significantly reduced its smoking footprint, currently maintaining just one designated smoking location within each of its Orlando theme parks.
SeaWorld now finds itself remarkably close to following a similar model. Whether that progression is intentional or simply the result of individual areas being repurposed remains unclear, but the disappearance of another designated smoking location leaves the park one step closer to eliminating them from its interior altogether.
Regardless of what the change may ultimately mean for SeaWorld’s smoking policy, transforming the former smoking section into a splash pad offers a far more family-oriented use of valuable park space.
Central Florida’s heat can be relentless, particularly during the summer months when soaring temperatures send guests searching for shade, air conditioning or virtually anything involving water. The new splash area gives younger visitors another way to cool off while giving families an extra place to pause and recharge between attractions.
The project also continues SeaWorld Orlando’s recent efforts to breathe new life into smaller or underutilized spaces throughout the park. Rather than allowing these areas to remain overlooked, the park has increasingly found ways to transform them into spaces that contribute more directly to the overall guest experience.
