Kaboodle, SeaWorld Orlando’s beloved Pacific walrus, was a familiar presence at the park for more than a decade. With her distinctive crossed tusks and memorable personality, she became a favorite among guests and animal care specialists alike. Following the announcement of her sudden passing at 23 years old, we look back at the remarkable life she lived, the relationships she formed, and the lasting memories she leaves behind.

To the animal care specialists who worked alongside her, Kaboodle was much more than a familiar face. She was a mother, a companion, and eventually a comforting presence for younger walruses who needed the guidance of an experienced adult. Her life was filled with connections that made her an important part of the walrus family at SeaWorld Orlando.

Kaboodle was born on May 1, 2003, at SeaWorld San Diego. Like her father, Obie, she developed distinctive crossed tusks that would become one of her most recognizable features. Her early life was challenging because she couldn’t establish a successful nursing relationship with her mother, prompting SeaWorld’s animal care team to step in and hand-raise her.

Among those who cared for Kaboodle was veterinarian Dr. DiRocco, who later recalled spending overnight shifts bottle-feeding her and helping her get comfortable entering the water. Their connection would eventually come full circle years later, when Dr. DiRocco was present for the births of Kaboodle’s own calves at SeaWorld Orlando.

In 2011, Kaboodle moved to SeaWorld Orlando, where she joined Garfield, a male Pacific walrus who had been rescued as an orphaned calf in Alaska. Both relied on human caregivers early in life, and they eventually formed a close bond. Together, they would become an important part of SeaWorld Orlando’s walrus family, welcoming two daughters in the years that followed.

On June 3, 2017, Kaboodle gave birth to her first daughter, Ginger, the first walrus calf ever born at SeaWorld Orlando. Her arrival marked a significant milestone for the park’s animal care team and the beginning of a new chapter in Kaboodle’s life. Although she was hand-raised, Kaboodle showed strong maternal instincts, nursing Ginger, resting alongside her, and developing vocalizations to communicate with her. The two were frequently observed close together, sometimes snuggling as they slept. Although Ginger eventually needed additional assistance from the animal care team after struggling to gain weight, those early interactions revealed Kaboodle’s attentive, nurturing nature.

Two years later, on July 3, 2019, Kaboodle welcomed her second daughter, Kora. With experience behind her, Kaboodle once again embraced motherhood, helping her calf grow and explore her surroundings. Kora grew into an outgoing, curious young walrus, described by SeaWorld as a social butterfly and a mama’s girl. She learned by watching the adults around her, particularly Kaboodle, whose intelligence and ability to learn new behaviors quickly were well known to her caregivers.

There was something especially meaningful about watching Kaboodle raise her daughters. The young walrus who once depended on people to bottle-feed her and teach her to enter the water had grown into an experienced mother, guiding her own calves through their earliest stages of life. That journey also brought a remarkable connection full circle: Dr. DiRocco, who had helped hand-raise Kaboodle in San Diego, was present for the births of both Ginger and Kora in Orlando. It was a touching reflection of the lasting relationships formed between animals and the people who dedicate their lives to caring for them.

Kaboodle’s nurturing nature extended well beyond her own daughters. In 2024, SeaWorld Orlando welcomed Ukiaq, affectionately known as Uki, a young Pacific walrus rescued as an orphan in Alaska. After receiving specialized care at the Alaska SeaLife Center, Uki was relocated to Orlando, where she could grow and develop alongside other walruses. For a young walrus, these relationships matter especially. In the wild, calves typically stay close to their mothers for one to two years, relying on them for nourishment, protection, companionship, and chances to learn key social behaviors.

With years of experience raising Ginger and Kora, Kaboodle became an important presence in Uki’s life. The two developed a close relationship, with Kaboodle taking on a surrogate mother role and offering the companionship and guidance only another walrus could provide. For those who watched them together, their bond reflected Kaboodle’s maternal nature. Once a vulnerable calf who depended on the patience and dedication of human caregivers, she had grown into an experienced mother who could offer comfort and companionship to a youngster who had experienced a similarly difficult beginning.

Kaboodle’s experience with younger walruses remained significant even during the final weeks of her life. After Annautaq, another orphaned Pacific walrus calf rescued in Alaska, arrived, SeaWorld identified Kaboodle’s maternal experience as an important consideration in plans to introduce the youngster to the herd. Although they had not yet introduced Kaboodle, the possibility of her helping another young walrus find his place in the family spoke to the important role she had come to fill at SeaWorld Orlando.

Although Kaboodle’s distinctive crossed tusks made her instantly recognizable, her personality truly set her apart. Animal care specialists described her as highly intelligent and quick to learn new behaviors, qualities that became especially meaningful as her daughters began observing and learning from her. Through her relationships with Ginger, Kora, and Uki, Kaboodle demonstrated the importance of companionship, communication, and the strong social bonds that develop between walruses.

For longtime SeaWorld Orlando visitors, Kaboodle was a familiar presence whose story unfolded over many years. Guests watched her alongside Garfield, witnessed Ginger and Kora grow from tiny calves into young adults, and eventually saw her develop a special relationship with Uki. These everyday interactions offered glimpses into her personality and the connections she shared with the animals around her.

At the time, those moments may have seemed ordinary: a mother resting beside her calf, two walruses swimming together, or familiar companions quietly sharing their habitat. Yet these simple, unremarkable moments often become the most treasured memories after an animal is gone. For those who came to know Kaboodle over the years, they are now part of what makes her absence so deeply felt.

Kaboodle’s sudden passing leaves a profound absence within SeaWorld Orlando’s walrus family and among the animal care specialists who spent years getting to know her. Throughout her 23 years, she was so much more than the milestones that marked her life. She was a hand-raised calf who depended on dedicated caregivers, a longtime companion to Garfield, a devoted mother to Ginger and Kora, and a nurturing presence for Uki. Each of those relationships became part of her story, shaping the lives of the animals around her and leaving lasting memories for those fortunate enough to know her.

Her daughters remain an important part of that legacy, carrying forward a family history that began in San Diego and continued in Orlando. For those who watched Kaboodle alongside Uki, they will also remember an experienced mother offering companionship to a young walrus who had lost her own. In many ways, Kaboodle’s life had come full circle. Once a vulnerable calf who relied on others for care and guidance, she grew into an animal who could offer that same comfort and companionship to the next generation.

Kaboodle will be remembered for her unmistakable crossed tusks, her intelligence, and the family she helped raise. But perhaps the most meaningful part of her legacy is the kindness and care reflected in the relationships she formed throughout her life. From a little walrus who needed someone to look after her to a mother who helped others find their place in the world, Kaboodle leaves behind a story worth remembering.

Our hearts are with Kaboodle’s animal care team, who dedicated so many years to her well-being and shared in the countless moments that made her life so special. We also extend our condolences to the guests who came to know and love her over the years, whether through regular visits, memorable encounters, or simply watching her alongside her family. The connections we form with animals like Kaboodle are deeply personal, and we know many will feel her absence.

Rest peacefully, Kaboodle. You will be deeply missed.
