Celebrating Makaio: SeaWorld Orlando’s Youngest Orca Turns 16

SeaWorld Orlandos youngest orca, Makaio, celebrates his 16th birthday! From his birth to legends Katina and Tilikum in 2010 to his playful personality today, we are looking back at his remarkable journey, the story behind his name, and the special place he holds at the park.

Makaio turns 16 today, marking another milestone for SeaWorld Orlando’s youngest killer whale, and we’re celebrating his birthday by looking back on his history, personality, and the unique story behind his name.

Born on October 9, 2010, to Katina and Tilikum, Makaio holds a special place in SeaWorld Orlando’s history as the park’s last killer whale to be born there. He arrived during the Believe era, when he was often seen swimming alongside his mother as a young calf. As Makaio grew, so did the presentations at Orca Stadium. The transition to One Ocean in 2011 marked a new chapter in his life, followed by the introduction of Orca Encounter in 2020.

Despite being the youngest member of the pod, Makaio certainly isn’t little anymore. Makaio is estimated to weigh over 6,000 lbs, and longtime guests may find it difficult to remember him as a little calf swimming alongside Katina. Over the years, he has grown into an impressive bull, and his trainers think he could one day match his brother Ikaika and hit 10,000lbs.

And what a personality he has developed! Makaio is known for his relaxed demeanor, playful nature, and apparent enthusiasm for interacting with his animal care team. Whether he’s participating in a training session, spending time at the slide-out, or simply observing the activity around him, he has a way of capturing the attention of everyone nearby. One might say he brings the golden retriever energy to the pod.

You can tell Makaio apart from the others by his wavy dorsal, his slightly inward-curving fluke, and the fact that he is slightly smaller than Trua when you see them side by side. And unlike Trua, he doesn’t have any freckles (but DOES have a very cute rostrum).

Makaio’s name also has a special story that connects him to the SeaWorld community from the start. Following his birth in October 2010, SeaWorld Orlando invited fans to help name its newest killer whale through a public vote on the park’s official Facebook page. It was the first time in the park’s history that fans could help name an orca. Three names were offered for consideration: Nico, derived from Greek and associated with victory; Haruki, a Japanese name meaning “shining brightly”; and Makaio, the Hawaiian form of Matthew, meaning “gift of God.” When the results were announced on January 4, 2011, Makaio emerged as the clear favorite, receiving approximately 55% of the votes. Sixteen years later, his name remains a special reminder that the guests who have watched him grow up also played a part in his story from the very beginning.

Today, Makaio spends much of his time alongside fellow male orca Trua. The two are frequently seen together, while Makaio also maintains opportunities to interact with Nalani and Malia through the gates connecting their habitats. These relationships are an important part of the orcas’ social environment, allowing them to engage with one another in different ways throughout the day. Many hope we might one day see the pod together again.

This birthday also marks a particularly meaningful milestone. It is Makaio’s first birthday since his mother, Katina, passed away on December 20, 2025, at the age of 50. Katina was a central figure in SeaWorld Orlando’s orca family for decades, and her legacy lives on through her offspring, including Makaio and his half-sister, Nalani.

As Makaio turns 16, his birthday also offers an opportunity to reflect on the connections guests have developed with SeaWorld’s orcas over the years. For some, Makaio has been a familiar face since he first swam alongside Katina. Others have come to know him through the park’s current Orca Encounter presentations, where his distinctive appearance and easygoing personality make him a memorable member of the pod. No matter when guests first met him, Makaio leaves a lasting impression.
