SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica Renew American Humane Certification

SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica have once again earned American Humane Certified status following independent assessments of their animal welfare practices. SeaWorld Orlando has held the certification since 2018, with Aquatica joining the program in 2020.

SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica have renewed their American Humane Certification once again, continuing a recognition both parks have held for several years. American Humane Society announced the renewed certifications on September 30, with SeaWorld Orlando participating in the program since 2018 and Aquatica since 2020. The certification program for zoos, aquariums, and conservation centers focuses on animal welfare practices, and both parks must complete another independent assessment of the animals in their care and the standards used to care for them.

“We are proud to continue to recognize both SeaWorld and Aquatica as American Humane Certified™ facilities,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of American Humane Society. “Zoos, aquariums, and conservation parks around the world play an important role in the animal welfare movement, and this renewed certification further signifies SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica as leaders in aquatic care and conservation.”

What Does the Certification Look At?

This certification doesn’t renew each year automatically. According to the American Humane Society, SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica underwent an independent assessment that included an on-site audit of animal welfare practices. The process is based on current science and best practices, with input from veterinarians and experts in animal welfare, animal science, zoology, and ethics.

During the audit, we consider several factors, including animal housing, nutrition, water quality, lighting, shade, sound and activity levels, and the training of staff members who interact with the animals. The benchmarks are also species-specific, allowing the assessment to consider the individual needs of different animals rather than applying the same standards across the board.

Dr. Chris Dold, Chief Zoological Officer for United Parks & Resorts, said the renewed certifications reflect the work of the animal care teams at both parks. “Renewed certification for both SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica reflects the dedication our animal care teams bring to their work every single day,” Dold said. “Achieving American Humane Certified™ status isn’t a one-time milestone; it’s an ongoing commitment to holding ourselves to the highest standards in animal welfare, informed by the latest science and validated by independent experts in the field.” He added that the company remains committed to animal care, conservation and education.

Continuing Certifications at Both Parks

For SeaWorld Orlando, the latest renewal continues a certification relationship that began in 2018, meaning the park has now maintained American Humane Certified status for eight years. Aquatica joined the program two years later in 2020 and has maintained its certification since then. While guests may be more familiar with the animal presentations, rescue stories, and conservation work they see throughout SeaWorld Orlando, the certification provides an outside assessment of everyday practices behind the scenes. With both parks successfully completing their latest assessments, the renewed certifications offer another independent look at the standards of care being maintained for the animals who call SeaWorld Orlando and Aquatica home.
